In December 1995, Rev. David Grinter of the Salisbury Methodist Church in England visited
us at Asbury UMC. He came in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of Francis Asbury's birth.
Salisbury Methodist was Asbury's last church before he came to America from England. Rev.
Grinter gave us a new perspective on the ministry of our namesake, Francis Asbury. Among the
things he shared with us were the Francis Asbury Watercolors, painted by a member of the
Salisbury Methodist congregation, Eric Jennings.
The 20 scenes Mr. Jennings painted are of stories that he took directly from Francis Asbury's
journal, which he spent countless hours researching. After viewing the watercolors and the
stories associated with them, we hope you will gain a better understanding of the ministry of the
man who is known as the founder of American Methodism.
During the process of placing these images on the internet, the brilliance of the colors has been
somewhat diminished. If you'd like to see the paintings in person, stop by Asbury UMC! Or if
you're ever in England, see the originals at Salisbury Methodist Church on St. Edmund's Church
Street (off Winchester Street) in Salisbury.
