Various Enterprises For Exploring Mathematics
Through Quilts

Geometry Patterning Measurement Number operations
Primary ~ Identify 2-D shapes in a variety of quilts - using slides, photo copies or samples use pattern blocks to;
a) create a picture
b) manipulate them to fill in a square - How many ways are possible?

~ Explore folding squares of material into a variety of shapes; a) observe the number of sides and points for a variety of fabric shapes

~ Identify and complete a quilt pattern

~ Create your own pattern using squares, with two colours, three etc.

~ Sort and classify a box of material

~ Measure fabric sides for a variety of shapes ~ Add seam allowance to a square (even numbers)

~ Multiplication and division - explore how many small squares will fit into a quilt

Geometry Patterning Measurement Number Operations
Inter. ~ Study the angles of various shapes, recreate them by cutting fabric shapes

~ Fold material shapes and study symmetry

~ Use pattern blocks to;
a) experiment with placing different shapes into irregular shapes
b) view, explore with, and create tessellations (that is often what a quilt is)

~ Create a pattern using only certain shapes

~ Sort and classify a box of material

~ Design a square and cut shapes to fit using the paper as a template

~ Redo above but add the necessary seam allowance to each piece

~ Fractions - explore the number of small squares that fit into a quilt

~ There are a number of ways to use pattern blocks to explore fractions (see Zullie book in biblio.)

~ Decimal Numbers - add seam allowances to even numbers
(0.2 cm to 2.0 cm)
