Apple
Sailboat Snack
The children make apple sailboats from an apple slice, a triangular piece of
cheese, & a toothpick. Eat for snack.
Sailboat
Eggs
Allow 1 egg per sailor
Ingredients: hard-boiled eggs, 1/2 teaspoon mustard, carrot sticks, chopped
pimentos, 1 teaspoon mayonnaise, 1 cup diced green peppers, celery sticks,
lettuce leaves, Utensils: knife and cutting board, bowl, fork, toothpicks for
mast, scissors, paper for sails, tape
Process:
1.
Peel the
hard-boiled eggs.
2. Discard shells or save for another art idea, such
as eggshell mosaics. Cut the eggs in half.
3. Remove the yolks and place them in a bowl. Mash
the yolks with 1 teaspoon mayonnaise and ½ teaspoon mustard.
4. Mound the mixture back into the egg white
sections.
5. Decorate the egg sections with the celery sticks,
carrot sticks and chopped pimentos.
6. Cut the paper into sails, attach to the
toothpicks with tape and put into eggs.
7. Place the lettuce on a serving plate, then put
the eggs on top of the lettuce.
marshmallow
trains.
Use pretzel sticks to
hook the "cars" together & use peanut butter to glue cheerios on
as wheels & other features.
Line up chairs in a row
of three each. With an aisle in the middle. Serve snack foods that might be
served on a plane. (BTW , is there any other snack served except peanuts:) ,
which may not be appropriate for small children ). You may choose cracker, orange juice, apple juice .Invite a child
to be the flight attendant to serve the "passengers"
Transportation
Pictures
Display pictures of the following means of transportation: truck, bus, car,
train, plane, ship, rocket. Ask the following questions and let the children
decide which vehicle answers the questions.
1. Which one is used for going to the moon?
2. Which one travels on tracks?
3. Which one carries vegetables from farm to city?
4. Which one goes through the air?
5. Which one do we park in our garage?
6. Which one stops in many cities and carries many people?
7. Which one travels on the ocean?
Gather some toy cars, trucks and trains & a supply of sidewalk chalk. Take
the children outside & choose a concrete or blacktop area. Encourage them
to draw roads, buildings, & houses.
Soap Box Derby
This is an activity to give the kid's toys "wheels" ...will also work
for
"stuffys, barbie dolls etc!!
Required: -small cardboard box, -four yougurt container tops, -four
brads, - -crayons or markers, -tape optional: String Start with a small box and
punch four small holes on the sides, about 1/2" from the bottom at each
corner. Then take the four plastic yogurt tops & punch a small hole in the
center of each (you need to do the hole punching). Affix
each yogurt top to the box with a brad & you instantly have four wheels
(cover the sharp ends of the brad with tape for safety). Attach a string and
handle, if you like. The rest is artwork. The child can decide if they want
their dinosaur to ride in a school bus, racing car, or pickup truck.
Read Paper Airplane by Fluvial Test. Make simple paper airplanes.
Sponsor a
flying contest. (check with airlines - they may donate "junior
wings")
Take a field trip to watch the airplanes land & take off. (some airports
will allow children to tour the airport & look inside a plane)
Invite the children to
pretend to be airplane.
The children can make
runways (blocks end to end) & build control ' towers".
Bring a couple of little suitcases & a flight bag into the dress up corner
(the suitcases were actually cosmetic cases). Have things to pack in them-
clothes, socks, hair brush & combs, sunglasses with plastic lenses, toy
camera
& stuffed toys.
Line up chairs to
simulate a plane & then sing the "people on the plane go up and
down" to the Wheels of the Bus tune. The pilot on the plane says Please
buckle up (instead of the driver saying please move back), etc.
For a licking & paste project provide the children with brown file folders
that look like suitcases ( round the corners and cut a handle along the side.)
Inside the folder, the children paste pictures of things they might take on a
trip (have pre-cut a variety of items from magazine pictures).
The purpose of this sensory activiity is to give children an opportunity to
smear the paste around. Leave the folders open until they've dried. Continued
the project the next day by having the children lick stamps from foreign
countries & paste them on the outside of their "suitcases". They
look like travel stickers. The stamps come in a big package & are very
inexpensive.
Watch
The Flying Jet
You can watch a jet flying all over the sky, no matter where you are. You'll
need a cardboard tube, a piece of plastic wrap and tape. Trace around the end
of the tube on the plastic wrap with a ball point pen. Draw a small jet plane
on the middle of the circle. Then tape the plastic wrap to the tube, keeping
the jet in the middle of the tube opening. To see the jet fly, just look up at
the sky or ceiling through the open end of your telescope. Move your head
around slowly while looking through it and the jet will seem to be flying
across the sky.
Homemade
Dashboards
Cardboard box
Plastic container lids
Brads
Crayons and markers
Cardboard tubes
Bottle caps
Make a dashboard. Find a sturdy cardboard box at least 18 inches wide. Next,
attach parts--lots of them. Punch a hole in the top of a yogurt container,
& affix it to the box with a brad (a pronged metal affixer you can purchase
at any stationery store). You now have a free-spinning dial. Put markings on
the dial & the box to make a meter. Affix a paper plate the same way--the
dashboard now has a steering wheel. A paper towel tube makes a splendid gear shift
lever, and bottle tops make excellent buttons. The more dials & buttons
& moving parts, the more interesting the dashboard. Be sure to leave a slot
for a key! We used ours in the car at first, then found that the dashboard can
be used for off-road travel, too. The children can use the dashboard to explore
the depths of the ocean, or even the outer reaches of the galaxy.
Discuss going on a trip
- let a child say where he/she would likke to go. Everyone can go to a favorite
place. Make a "suitcase" by folding a large piece of construction
paper in half. Cut any shape handles and glue on. After children do this, let
them cut [from magazines or catalogs] items to go in the suitcases. Glue them
inside. Let each dry.
Build a superhighway on the floor. Place masking tape on the carpet to make
various roads, interchanges, on-ramps and off-ramps. Small boxes cut out the
right way can make a wonderful tunnel, bridge, or viaduct.
Create a train for stuffed animals by punching holes in the sides of cardboard
boxes & tying them together with string or old shoelaces.
make
a car
you will need the
following:
1 cardboard box approx. 2ft deep,3-4ft long (med size appliance type box)
2 rectangular meat trays or cardboard for license plates
5 paper plates for wheels and steering wheel
paper fasteners (brass) to attach wheels, licence plate & steering wheels
markers, paint, scissors, glue string or yarn to tie car over shoulders Cut off
flaps from open end of box. This is now the bottom of the car. Cut a circle out
from the top large enough for the child to step into & wear around his/her
waist. Have children decorate the license plates & attach to the front
& rear of the car with fasteners or glue. Attach the steering wheel to the
top of the car in front with paper fasteners. Draw in horn. Attach 4 paper
plates for wheels with fasteners.
Decorate the car body with paint or markers etc, draw in doors,
headlights etc. Make a small hole on left and right side of car body to loop
wool or string through so that child can wear the car and have hands free for
steering wheel. Make sure the yarn or string is the correct length to allow
child to move safely & not too long to be a hazard .
CRAFTS
Airplane
Use 2 paper towel rolls & one toilet paper roll. On one of the paper
towel rolls measure down about 3" & cut 1/2 way through - then measure
another (slightly less) 2" & cut 1/2 way through - remove this section
- glue the second paper towel roll crosss ways in this section (for wings) - cut
a 1/8" slit in the opposite end of the first tube - smash the toilet paper
roll slightly & slip into the slit - glue. Paint your airplane - use craft
sticks to form an X - paint them white & glue to the front of the airplane
for a propeller - break another craft stick in half & insert them in the tube
under the wings for landing gear.
Transportation
How do I get there?
Materials needed: puppet, large bag, toy vehicles (helicopter, train, airplane,
car, truck, motorcycle, boat, rocketship or horse)
1.
Put all the toys in
the bag. Introduce the puppet: 'My
friend has a problem. He needs to go to ----. How can he get there?' Let
children name different ways the puppet can travel. Ask if they will be good
ways to travel. Why or why not?
2. Show the bag. Explain that inside the bag are
ways that we can travel, and that the word we use is transportation. This is
how we get from one place to another.Describe a mode of transportation that you
have in the bag.
3. Have the children make guesses. Remove toys.
Have children paint and
decorate shoe boxes. Add two wheels on each side of each shoe box. String them
together.
Car
Tracks
Art
Pour a puddle of paint on a grocery tray. Drive a car through the paint, and
then drive it on some paper.
Car
in a Bubble
Science
Blow a big bubble on the counter top. Dip a toy car into bubble solution and
drive it into the bubble. You will have a car in a bubble.
art activity, we glued
cut out construction paper shapes into the shape of a train (rectangle -
boiler, triangle - cow catcher, square - engineer's cabin, upside down triangle
- funnel, 3 circles -wheels). Then we
glued cotton on for smoke. Arrange 1
chair per child in a curvy line. Have children sit in chairs and tell them
train is about to leave. Blow a whistlecalling "All aboard! Train is leaving!"
Clothespin
Sailboat
Need: spring type clothespins, toothpicks, white paper, glue or glue sticks,
scissors, markers
1.
Remove the hinges
from the clothespins.
2. Cut a 2 1/2 in. square of paper.
3. Glue the flat pieces of the clothespins together,
leaving a hole at one end.
4. Insert the toothpick into the paper forming a
"sail".
5. Put glue into the hole and inset the toothpick,
& let dry.
Tugboats
Materials:
1.
1 pint milk carton
2. six black construction paper circles
3. toilet paper tubes, two 1-in. slits in bottom
directly across from one another
4. cotton balls
5. red and black tempera paint
6. glue
What to Do:
1.
Have the children
paint the sides of the milk carton red and the toiletpaper tube black. Add some
white glue to the red paint to help it adhere to the milk carton.
2. Before the paint dries, the children can add
black circles to the sides of the boat, three to a side. They will stick
without gluing when glue is already in paint.
3. Push the tube onto the boat center. Pull and
stretch the cotton ball glue to the top of the tube.
4. After boats dry attach and string and use in
water.
Circle for the Balloon
part (make it on white so they can design their own balloon) Rectangles (thin)
to glue for the strings that hold the balloon to the basket Square for the
basket part
Make an airplane from a
wooden clothespin and a Tongue depressor. Place tongue depressor through the
slit in the clothespin. They can paint these if they want. Encourage the children to "fly "
their airplanes. and sing this song
*sing to Row, row, row your boat
Fly, fly, fly the plane
quickly through the sky
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Its such fun to fly.
How about Playing
"the Conductor says" like "Simon Says" Don’t eliminate any
children from the game.. Look for the children to follow directions, not for
anyone to win or lose. The children may
enjoy being the "conductor"
Line chairs up and play "train".
Make tickets and have someone collect them.
Ask all the children where they are going and why. Talk about what trains carry. Does anyone have a train (electric or Brio)
at home they could bring in and set up in the classroom or the lobby of the
center?
Build a village with mountains and tunnels, etc. with blocks.
Make train cars out of shoe boxes and lots of other "stuff". Take
cardboard boxes (1/2) and cut a hole out of the top (enough to put it over the
child's head - resting on their shoulders). Have the kids paint and decorate
them. You can even put black construction paper wheels on the side (I know a
train does not have wheels LOL). Then, if they are old enough, you can put
crape paper to sting them together. The kids love to "BE" trains. We
sing songs and walk thru the neighborhood.
Train Cars
Use one large cardboard box per child. Cut top and bottom off. Make
shoulder straps from heavy ribbon. Let them paint their own train cars. Use
small painted paper plates for the wheels. Line them up and let them march and
sing "Workin on the railroad."
CHOO CHOO
Place your hands on your child's waist and have her take you on a choo choo
train ride around the room. Your train can make stops along the way, and other
passengers can hop on board the train as you stop, shouting "all
aboard".

He keeps it healthy so we can drive near and far.
He puts the air in our tires,
looks under the hood,
and tests the electrical wires
to see if they're good.
He checks the oil to see if it's low
Then he puts in some gas and away we go.
