News from A Correspondent in Vasto

Date: Tue, 28 Jan. 1997

Here is some information about the present situation in Vasto:

We have a new mayor, Giuseppe Tagliente, who has changed some things in the city, and now Vasto is as nice a city as has ever been. There's a new system for urban traffic, nice new gardens and new illumination of the historic area and of the suburbs. This summer the restoration of the famous landing stage (pier) of Vasto Marina will be finished, and new parking will be built.

In December 1996, there was the inauguration of the University of Vasto, for people who want to have a degree. There's also new development of tourism.

There are other projects for the city and in the future we hope that Vasto will become an important touristic city, but there is also bad news, with growing unemployment, young people are forced to look for an occupation in all our country with bad results.

Yours faithfully,
Luigi (Cirone)

NEW MOSAIC

A late first-century A.D. mosaic discovered in the town of Vasto, in Abruzzo, may be the largest one of Roman date in Italy. So far 860 square feet have been brought to light, but the excavator, Andrea Staffa, the archaeological superintendent of Abruzzo, says it may cover 1,200 square feet. Discovered on the floor of a bathhouse, it has black-and-white images of Neptune, another god riding on a dragon's back, and a goddess, as well as geometrical patterns. In the 1950s another large mosaic with images of fish and marine animals was found nearby.
