McNairy County is
located in West Tennessee, one of the states three grand divisions.
It was created in 1823 from Hardin County and named in honor of John McNairy
(1762- 1837), North Carolina Superior Court judge for Mero District, 1796
Constitutional Convention delegate, U. S. district judge for Tennessee,
Davidson Academy Trustee. The first county seat was at Purdy, currently
it is located at Selmer.
BRIEF HISTORY
Prior to 1810 the lands now embraced by McNairy County
were occupied by the Chickasaw Indians, it being a part of the territory
known as the Western District. At this date the Indian titles were extinguished
and the county of HARDIN was established, which embraced the territory
now covered by McNairy County. On the 8th. day of October, 1823,
the General Assembly of Tennessee passed an Act providing for the organization
of McNairy County, taking its name from Judge John McNairy, of Nashville.
In 1824 the county was organized.
