UFO ROUNDUP Volume 1, Number 39 November 24, 1996 Editor: Masinaigan FREE UFO SEEN BY TWO JETLINERS OFF LONG ISLAND Two jetliners outbound from New York's Kennedy International Airport encountered a UFO at 16,000 feet, not far from where TWA Flight 800 exploded and crashed last July. The encounter took place on Saturday night, November 16, 1996 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Twenty minutes earlier, a Boeing 747 belonging to Pakistan International Airlines took off from JFK Airport, bound for Frankfort, Germany, the first leg of its long flight back to Karachi. Pakistan International Airlines Flight 712 was flown by Capt. Whaid Shah and First Officer Nasir Aziz. As the jumbo jet approached the crash site 10 miles south of East Moriches, Long Island, N.Y., "my co-pilot saw a streak of light coming from the left-hand side (north) going toward our right-hand side (south) and ahead of the aircraft about three miles," Capt. Shah said. (See the New York Post for November 18, 1996.) Aziz reportedly described the UFO as a "dark shape with four green lights" that "crossed our flight path three or four miles ahead of us." "A TWA flight immediately behind the Pakistani jet made the same sighting and asked to turn around, aviation sources said. The TWA plane was rerouted and the air corridor used by the Pakistani jet was closed after the plane left the area...TWA would not comment on Saturday's incident." (New York Post, November 18, 1996) Radar contact with the UFO was confirmed by the FAA Center in New York, Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusetts and the FAA air traffic center in Nashua, New Hampshire. Capt. Shah asked if there were "any military exercises going on. They (the Boston tower) said no, so I pressed on." "We don't have an explanation for it," said FBI spokesman Joseph Valiquette. "The flight crew allegedly saw something in the sky that was unusual--something with lights." (See the Boston, Mass. Herald for November 18, 1996.) One theory was that the object was one of the Leonid meteors. The Leonid meteor shower began after midnight and reached its peak at 2 a.m. Saturday. Yet the USAir pilot who took off after the PIA and TWA flights reported no meteors. In Taunton, Massachusetts, 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Boston, meteorologist David Henry spotted five meteors in the sky after midnight. (See the Taunton Daily Gazette for November 18, 1996.) Twenty minutes after the PIA encounter, at 10:30 p.m., a woman living in rural Woodstown, New Jersey spotted "an egg-shaped UFO." She described the object as having "a white fuselage, not glowing white but more like solid white. There were two glaring red lights at the tail end, and one glowing green light underneath." She said the UFO was "huge...maybe as big as a football field...moving very fast" at treetop level above the woodland country five miles (8 kilometers) east of Woodstown. "I felt certain it was under intelligent control." Woodstown (population 3250) is in the southwestern corner of the state, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Wilmington, Delaware. The town is also 80 miles (128 kilometers) southwest of the site of PIA Flight 712's encounter. (Email Interview) UFOs SEEN BY THOUSANDS IN BOMBAY Just before sunrise, around 6 a.m., on Saturday, November 9, 1996, street people in the Kandivli section of Bombay, India were astonished to see a small UFO, described as "a cricket-ball- sized object" speeding overhead at an estimated altitude of 9 meters (27 feet). At 6:45 a.m., the UFO suddenly rocketed skyward, turned to the west, and disappeared across Back Bay into the Malabar Hills. Saturday night, at 9 p.m., a large UFO flew east across Mahim Bay, coming from the Arabian Sea. Eyewitnesses in the Tharne-Panvel section of Bombay described it as "a large frisbee-shaped object (saucer) glowing with a steady light. It moved in an arch over the city." "It disappeared in a few seconds but not before emitting a beam of light. I had my binoculars and my telescope, which I use for stargazing. But before I could get them, it vanished. I am a regular skywatcher, and I know what an artificial satellite looks like," said Mrs. Brady, an eyewitness. "This was some- thing else--brighter, golden, without the blinking lights that you see on aeroplanes. It was something like the planet Saturn seen from the side without its rings." (See the Times of India for November 11, 1996.) J.J. Rawal Jr., director of the Nehru Planetarium in Bombay, said the UFO "might have been Venus," but added, "Still, as scientists, we do not want to dismiss these reports out of hand. The absence of evidence does not necessarily mean evidence of the absence of UFOs. So we are keeping vigil over the sky." (Many thanks to Makarand G. Waikar for sending us the Times of India story.) INDIA'S BIG AIR CRASH NEAR UFO ENCOUNTER SITE On November 12, a Saudi Airlines Boeing 747 and a Kazakh Ilyushin 76 transport jet collided in mid-air over Charkhi Dadri, India, 60 miles (96) kilometers west of New Delhi. Over 350 people were killed in the collision, making it the third worst air disaster of all time. Twenty miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Charkhi Dadri lies the town of Rewari, which was the scene of one of India's rare UFO encounters back on March 17, 1978. Numerous eyewitnesses saw a glowing orange metallic sphere fly over the rooftops of Rewari. "Among those who saw the UFO were Dr. Shatrugan Shukla, assistant professor of music at the University of Delhi, along with his wife and son. 'We noticed a blackish metallic spheroid, glowing orange on top and with a long white tail--like steam from a pressure cooker--streaming out behind it. It was moving fast, shooting up and down, then going in a zigzag fashion.'" (See the book UFO REPORT, Pocket Books, Simon & Schuster, Inc., New York, N.Y. May 1985, page 191.) TERROR IN THE GANGES VALLEY Since July 1, approximately 33 children have disappeared from the village of Banbirpur, in the southeastern corner of India's Uttar Pradesh state, 350 miles (530 kilometers) from New Delhi. The Indian police claim that the children were killed by a rogue wolfpack, but the villagers say the culprits are "white wolves" or werewolves. "'It came across the grass on all four paws--like this,' said Sita Devi, the 10-year-old sister of the boy killed by a wolf August 16 in Banbirpur. She moved forward in a crouch from a cluster of villagers gathered by a well. She told her story with tears in her eyes, to anxious murmurs from the crowd." "'As it grabbed Anand (age 4), it rose onto two legs until it was as tall as a man,' she said. 'Then it threw him over its shoulder. It was wearing a black coat and a helmet and goggles.'" "The girl's grandfather, Ram Lakhan Panday, who drove a truck in Calcutta for 50 years before retiring to his native village, said, 'As long as officials pressure us to say it was a wolf, we'll say it was a wolf. But we have seen this thing with our own eyes. It is not a wolf; it is a human being.'" (See The Oregonian of Portland, Oregon for September 1, 1996.) (Editor's Comment: Sounds more like a "humanoid" to me. Note Sita's description of "goggles." And thanks to UFO NEWSCLIPPING SERVICE for The Oregonian story.) ANOTHER UFO SPOTTED IN OHIO Late Saturday night, November 16, 1996, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Carl Draper was driving on Ohio Route 422 in rural Geauga County, heading east toward Auburn Corners (population 70). As he approached the intersection of Route 44, just west of the reservoir, he "saw an object about the size of a manhole cover cross the sky from north to south." The disc-shaped UFO was flying at a high rate of speed, seemingly coming from Lake Erie. Carl described the UFO as "orange in color, and its trail was green...The tail extended across the entire arc of the sky, and it (UFO) covered the distance in less than one second." Auburn Corners is located 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of the suburbs of Cleveland. (Email Interview) NINE UFOs GATHER IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT Hard on the heels of last week's Calipatria sighting comes another report of UFOs in the desert east of San Diego. On Thursday night, November 14, 1996, Michael Blake was driving on Highway 8 with his girl friend Jasmine Fletcher. The couple's van pulled off the highway at Ocotillo Wells, a state campground 93 miles (149 kilometers) east of San Diego and seven miles (9 kilometers) south of Painted Gorge. They set up camp with another couple near a grove of Joshua trees. Looking at the gray night sky, Mike "noticed a gathering of craft like I have never seen. At first 'it' looked like a military helicopter with its lights turned off. All at once, we (four) got the creeps as the craft began to turn and change shape." "We watched most of the night," Mike said. "Larger craft came down from the sky. Every now and then two or three of these would come over to where our vans were." Seeing the UFOs approach, both couples rolled their sleeping bags beneath their vans and waited breathlessly. "They came over to where we were huddled, and they appeared to be watching us," Mike said. "At one time I saw nine ships hovering at about a two-mile (3-kilometer) distance. They moved (darted) about in the sky like cells in a plasm. Most of the ships gathered three to five miles (5 to 7 kilometers) away--(we) could see the ground light up beneath them." (Unsolicited Email) GLOWING WHITE SPHERE SEEN IN COLORADO On Wednesday, November 13, 1996, at 6:30 p.m., several residents of Buena Vista, Colorado (population 2,075) were outdoors when they "saw a large ball of light for about four or five seconds moving north to south" over the Pike National Forest east of town. "Some declared it a white light, and others said it was rainbow-colored. All said it was very bizarre." Buena Vista is on Colorado Highway 24, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Salida, the site of the famous UFO encounter of September 1995. (Many thanks to Tim Edwards of Salida for this report.) MYSTERIOUS CLOUD HOVERS OVER ARIZONA TOWN For the past two weeks, residents of Mobile, Arizona (population 90) have seen an unusual cloud hovering about 500 feet (152 meters) from the ground. The cloud is shaped like a Conestoga wagon wheel, with distinct vaporous spokes radiating outward from a central hub. Malcolm F. first became aware of the cloud when he tried to put a quarter in the local cafe's jukebox. "I was hoping to hear 'Don't Come Home from Cheatin' with Lovin' on Your Mind,'" said Malcolm. "The quarter went in okay. But then the Wurlitzer just plain shut down. I noticed it was getting kind of dark out, so I looked out the window and there it was." "We're having some kind of ongoing aerial phenomenon over here," said Joseph S., who described it as "a humungous wagon-wheel cloud-like formation...They estimate it covers (an area) about five miles square. It doesn't move, but it appears offset from the same position each time." At night, the "cloud" appears 75 to 80 degrees from the eastern horizon. "They didn't count the spokes but will next time." Located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Glendale, the town of Mobile is one of the most isolated in Arizona. It's nestled in a desert valley hemmed in by two mountain chains, the Sierra Estrella mountains to the east and the Maricopa range to the west. In January 1996, residents reported seeing "an oversized blue jellybean-like object sailing through the night sky and disappearing." (Email Interview) GHOSTLY GIANT FLYING WING FLIES NEAR AUSTIN During the last days of October 1996, Christopher H. invited some of his 20-something male friends to his house in Leander, Texas, a small town 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of the state capital, Austin. "My friends and I were out back, looking for shooting stars," Chris said. "The first sighting was about 10 p.m. I saw it first, directly overhead, and pointed it out to my friend. He saw it immediately. The object traveled from north to south and was no longer visible after 25 degrees of travel." Chris said the object "was the shape of a flying wing but transparent. It distorted the light as it moved in front of stars and clouds." He added that the UFO covered the distance in just four seconds. About 15 minutes later, one of Chris's friends "saw the object traveling west to east" from Smithwick to Hutto, Texas "at about 5 degrees to the earth. This sighting lasted two seconds or less, and I did not catch it at that time." After another 15 minutes, "my friend saw the object traveling overhead in a northeasterly direction (towards Georgetown), but only briefly and I was not fast enough to see it. We called the local news about 30 minutes later." On Saturday night, November 9, Chris and two of the same group of friends saw their "flying wing" again. "Its direction was the same as the first time (north to south)," he said, estimating that its wingspan was about the same as a Boeing 757. Again the "semi-transparent" UFO took four seconds to travel from horizon to horizon. None of the eyewitnesses, he added, "have ever seen UFOs before." (Email Interview) GLOWING UFO FLIES OVER SUDBURY, ONTARIO On Saturday, November 23, 1996, about an hour after dark at 5:30 p.m., Gordon T. looked out the window of his third-floor apartment in Sudbury, Ontario (population 97.604) and "saw a ball of light about the size of a dime held at arm's length. It drifted across the horizon at eye level." (Gordon's apartment is 50 feet above ground). The UFO "drifted like a balloon across the horizon," he added, "It seemed to stop once or twice but may have been moving away from me. It lasted for about ten minutes and moved from north to south," heading for Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. (Unsolicited Email) A second Sudbury man also saw the object and notified MUFON Ontario. Sudbury is the premier nickel-mining city of Canada and is located 258 miles (373 kiolmeters) north of Toronto. TRIANGULAR UFO HOVERS OVER GATINEAU HOME On Monday, November 4, 1996, at 8:45 p.m., Mrs. Ginette C., 32, of Gatineau, Quebec was driving home from the grocery store with her son, age 4. After parking her car, she made two trips into the house with bags of groceries. As she started up the walkway to the house a second time, with a grocery bag in each hand, a huge triangular vehicle appeared over the roof of the house. Ginette described the UFO as "triangular...five times bigger than the full moon, dark with three globes of white light under each corner and one smaller (light) in the middle of a reddish color. The red one blinked repeatedly. The UFO was 300 feet (95 meters) wide and 50 feet above my head and was totally silent." Ginette stared at it open-mouthed for three minutes. Then she overcome her suprise and paralysis and, not taking her gaze off the UFO, walked to the porch. She managed to open the door with one knee and yelled for her husband. Thinking there was a problem, Mr. C. appeared with their other son, age 7. "Look! Look up in the sky!" Ginette shouted. They both got a clear view of the UFO before "it turned to the south and flew towards Ottawa." Gatineau (population 73,479) is in southwestern Quebec, just north of Ottawa, the national capital. This case was investigated by Denis Marquis and Gilles Latour of the CEIPI ufological study group. According to Marquis and Latour, "The description is consistent between all of them." (Many thanks to CEIPI for this story.) HOVERING UFO SEEN IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND On Friday, November 1, at 10:30 p.m., Kirsty Gilbert and her son left Rothesay Bay, on the East Coast Bays of Auckland, New Zealand (population 900,000), heading home to Torbay, another suburb of the large seaport. As she drove along, Kirsty saw "a circle of lights" in the sky, located in the upper left corner of the windshield. "Her son counted seven lights in a circular pattern and one in the center. The lights appeared to be shimmering as though being seen through the trees which they had just passed." Stopping the car, Kirsty watched the lights, which "appeared to flash off briefly and then on again." Feeling anxious and vulnerable, she got back in the car "and resumed her journey." (See the North Shore Times-Advertiser for November 7, 1996.) In Albany, four kilometers (2.5 miles) north of the East Coast Bays, two people driving north "saw a curiously-lighted object pacing their car for several minutes. When they stopped to fill the car with petrol (gasoline), the object had disappeared. After leaving the service station, they noticed that the object had reappeared and seemed to be pacing their vehicle again." Several residents of "the Bays" saw "these strange circular lights" around 10:30 p.m. One eyewitness was Senior Sgt. Don Blayney of the Auckland police, who saw the lights from his home in Rothesay Bay. He noticed that the UFO seemed to be hovering over Brown's Bay. Other witnesses reported "a laser light display" on the nearby Whanpaparoa Peninsula. (Many thanks to New Zealand ufologist Murray Bott for sending us the Times-Advertiser story.) A police spokesman said callers reported that the unidentified object appeared at 7:20 am, moving slowly east for about 10 minutes, then turning west and flying away at high speed. The spokesman said there were no military or civilian aircraft in the areas at the time. A television news cameraman recorded the event, and Korean newspapers ran photographs of a bright yellow object surrounded by an orange halo. The Yonhap News Agency quoted a source as saying the object's flight pattern was "exactly like that of a UFO spotted last year." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Taken from Korean Newspaper on Internet. Different from unsubstantiated sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFO) before, the bright object, this time, according to many residents who saw it, appeared in the sky at 7:20 a.m. and stayed there for about 10 minutes before flying southward. The entire episode was captured by a cameraman of cable news channel YTN in an ENG camera used for broadcast purposes. A UFO expert said that the flying pattern of the object was exactly like that of the flying object sighted last year in Korea. ``The object first moved slowly, then turned 180 degrees and flew away, leaving distinct afterimages _ the same pattern of flight as that patched together by witnesses to earlier UFO sightings,'' he said. ``We may have to bring in foreign experts to hear their opinion on the frequent sightings of spacecraft from outer space here,'' he said. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that there were no military or civilian aircraft flying in the area at the time when the object was allegedly sighted. ``We are working to determine what the object was,'' a military spokesman said. Since late last year, an unidentified object has been sighted on two occasions arousing public interest about UFO and visitors from outer space. A UFO society in Korea has held discussions, photo exhibitions and film showings on UFOs, increasing people's curiosity about them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: david@holodeck.demon.co.uk (David Somen) Newsgroups: alt.ufo.reports Subject: Pakistan co-pilot reports similar incident to TWA 800 Date: Sun, 24 Nov 1996 12:36:09 GMT The Weird World This Week The FBI is investigating a report that the co-pilot of a Pakistani plane saw "something unusual in the sky". To: Multiple recipients of list OVNIBR-L Newsflash to all: On the BBC radio news at 1.00pm today (Thursday 21 November) came a story that French air force jets had been scrambled following reports of a huge aerial explosion over the Pyrenees mountains adjoining northern Spain. According to official air force sources, no aircraft has been reported missing. This information came via one of our readers and details are sketchy at this time. If I come across anything later in the day i will of course provide details. Meantime, if anyone else in this group can obtain specific information I would be extremely interested to learn what they uncover. There have been numerous reports here in the United Kingdom of extremely powerful explosions in the skies, notably followed by eye-witness reports of burning debris in one recent incident off the west coast of Scotland. I have some air-traffic communication for the Scottish case which is currently being evaluated. A comprehensive account of this, plus further curious happenings off the east coast of Lincolnshire and Norfolk will feature in the next issue of UFO magazine due out on 27 December here in the UK. It may interest colleagues to learn that the most recent case of huge aerial explosions took place over the isle of man on monday of this week. That is now being followed up. Graham W. At 4:46pm, we started recording the observations. The object was a bright pinpoint of light which had the same characteristics as outlined above. In contrast to last evening's sighting, the object seemed brighter and a bit closer/larger this night. The object once again slowly meandered through the sky. The still cameras were functioning well, but we had some technical difficulties with the video camera. All witnesses were able to follow the object with the naked eye as well as viewing through binoculars. Throughout the period, the object remained bright, pure white, with a somewhat spherical appearance. At about 5:06pm, the video problems were resolved, and the object was easily visible through the camera, and recording commenced. The camera was hand held, as a tripod was not available to us that evening. At 5:09pm, the object appeared to take on a reddish hue. This was noticed by multiple witnesses. A single, tiny illuminated object was visualized (by the witnesses with binoculars) exiting the primary object from the top portion and traveled to the left and away from the "parent". This object was visible for about 20 seconds and moved away from the primary object. This was not visible through the lens of the video camera. Within seconds after this, the primary object seemed to undergo a transformation. The object seemed to become a dull color, and changed into a string of smaller objects aligned vertically, and splitting off from one another, and then all objects vanished from view. We continued to observe for a few more minutes, but no further sightings ensued. End time: 5:11pm. The transformation and splitting of the object was visible through the lens of the video camera. We quickly set up the camcorder and played back the tape. We were very excited and pleased to note that the both events were captured on the videotape. The UFO was brightly visible on the film, and the camera did pick up the first object that exited it. We were ecstatic to see that the final transformation was captured on the video camera as well. This videotape as well as the still photos are being sent to a special film lab for analysis. We returned on Wednesday but were not treated to an appearance of the object. Thursday was rainy and foggy with visibility near Zero. We will keep you up to date on any further developments. Do to the length of time from the date of the sighting and the investigation over the past two weeks ending on Dec. 9th, 1996, Facts were very hard to dig up. The local papers were contacted and a search of the issues for a week after the reported sighting did not reveal any articles or mention of the reported sighting. The Medford Airport tower and air traffic controllers were contacted and nothing out of the normal was reported on that day. Both Traffic and approach radar revealed no contacts other than normal traffic. Medford Police and Oregon State Police, Jackson County Police logs do not show any contacts with stranded motorists or reports of same. 911 logs do not show any telephone reports concerning UFO's or stalled motorists. A grid search of Table Rock on foot revealed nothing out of the ordinary, This could be do to the time frame. A total of 73 residents in that area were contacted by Raven Team members and nothing unusual was reported. This could be do to them being afraid to talk about any incidents. Conclusions: The most obvious conclusion is that this is a bogus report. But again the time frame that is involved has given time for someone to come in and remove any evidence and silence any who would have come forward at a earlier date. The Event is highly suspect. Regards Ross Dowe Ross Dowe Snr Operator EMAIL rossdowe=40netlink.net.au National UFO HOTLINE, manned 24 hour per day =a9 From: "Bob Kingsley" Newsgroups: alt.paranet.ufo Subject: Lights in the Sky, Dorset UK Date: 7 Dec 1996 16:14:37 GMT I caused a bit of a flurry on my breakfast show at Gold Radio, Shaftesbury, Dorset UK this week by talking about the lights in the sky I saw on Thursday morning (5 December 96) on my way in to the studio. It was about twenty to six, with a clear sky and a crescent moon, and as I was about a mile out of Shaftesbury I thought I saw a flash of light in the sky to my right and just behind me (a southerly direction). It was very quick and by the time I'd registered it, it was gone. But when I was parking the car I saw a flash of light in the sky ahead of me, towards Salisbury in Wiltshire, I'd guess. It was like far-off sheet lightning, only there was no storm nearby and the sky above was still mainly clear. It was a white light, diffused across the horizon (although the actual skyline was obscured by a high wall at the other end of the yard, about 200 yards away). Then about ten seconds later, another one, from further south, where the skyline is less obstructed. I thought of electric trains and the sparks that sometimes fly, but there are no electrified rails around here. I considered the army -- could they have some manouvres going on up on Salisbury Plain? But a gun that could make such a bright, large white light would have to be tremendously loud, I should think, and would people nearby tolerate such a racket so early in the morning? Anyway, I mentioned it on the air at about ten past six. The floodgates opened. First Pat called in to say that she'd been up all night watching them. I think she's a bit of an insomniac, but anyway she said her bedroom faced north, towards Warminster, and throughout the night she'd seen several bright, single, white flashes in the sky from that direction. We chatted on the phone (not on the air) for a while, and I mentioned her call later on in the show. After that, call after call came in from many of our regular listeners saying they had also seen these lights -- in many cases not only that morning but also for some weeks beforehand! A woman train-driver called Anne told me she had just been leaving Yeovil Junction at twenty to six that morning when the sky lit up in front of her moving train. She also thought of electrified rails, but knew that there aren't any in that area. She was mystified. On arriving home after her shift, she heard me talking about it on the show and called in to report what she saw. Another caller, Cheryl (one of our regulars), told how she's been working a night shift at Stalbridge for the past few weeks, and when she's been driving home to Shaftesbury early in the morning, she's often seen these bright flashes. She even got her husband to come out with her one morning because she was having difficulty convincing him, and he saw them too. So did their two children and Cheryl's sister. She said to me, "You know how it is, you don't like to talk about these things in case someone thinks you're a bit daft, but I heard you talking about it, and all those other people saying they've seen things, and I thought, 'well ...'" John from Gillingham told how he's seen them for the past few weeks when he's been walking his dogs by the south bank of the river Lodden in Gillingham. They seem to be coming from a direction due south of Gillingham and west of Shaftesbury. Stella called from Sturminster Newton. She'd seen them too. Kim saw them Wednesday night at about seven-thirty, "coming from over Bulbarrow way." Adam saw them in the sky above Salisbury. Derek was driving his car home from Wincanton to Gillingham on Wednesday evening at about ten past five, when the sky lit up in front of him. Gregory phoned in to say that his dad Gary had seen a light at about half past seven on the Wednesday evening, again over Bulbarrow, and Gregory then saw one on that Thursday morning at about five o'clock in the Sturminster/Manston area. John saw the flashing lights in Salisbury at four in the morning on Wednesday and then again at seven-thirty in the evening on the A30 as he was driving home. Simon's been seeing them for the past few weeks in the Warminster/Salisbury direction. We had some "hard" sightings reported too. Two youngsters, Murray and Fern, told me how they had seen the lights at 6 o'clock that Thursday morning -- and also reported a blue-coloured object seen at the top of Glue Hill, just outside Sturminster. A mother called to say her eight-year-old son, whom she described as "not given to flights of fancy," had rushed in to the house from the garden on Tuesday evening, very excited because he had "just seen a flying saucer." He said it was large and round with lights -- and it was being followed by two aircraft. She said she'd just put it down to his imagination, but now she'd heard me talking about this on the show, she wasn't so sure. Christine spotted a UFO in North Cheriton, near Wincanton, Somerset. She said she saw it fly across a field on 21st November. It was thirty feet wide and orange with matt, creamy markings. The earliest observation took us as far back as November 5th. A woman called in to say that she'd seen them in the sky on Firework Night, but just knew they couldn't be fireworks -- they were just too bright and too silent. What to make of all this? Several theories were phoned in, the favourites being: lightning seen from a distance; army and/or navy exercises with the consequent firing of big guns; and meteors. It so happened my farming news that morning was the long-range weather forecast from Southampton Weather Centre, so I asked the weatherman if there were any storms around. He said there was some activity in the English Channel. He thought it unlikely we were seeing lightning reflections. (Later, a listener called to say there has been a storm over the Isle of Wight and that we were probably seeing the reflection from the lightning there. But would the reflection from the Isle of Wight really carry as far inland -- a hundred-odd miles -- as Yeovil?) The following morning a caller phoned in to say the lights had also been regularly seen for the past few weeks further south in the Dorchester area where the local paper had recently carried an article about them saying the likeliest explanation was a meteor storm. A quick trawl on the Internet revealed that there is only one meteor shower observable from the northern hemisphere at this specific time of year: the Geminids, active from December 6 to December 19. They usually reach maximum activity during December 13 to 14. Hourly rates are typically near 80. The meteors are described as rapid and yellowish, with about 4% displaying persistent trains. They possess an average magnitude near 2.4. They could be responsible for the lights -- and seem to be a more plausible explanation than, say, army thunder-flashes or flares. But I've seen meteors before -- admittedly not often and not knowingly during a big shower -- but those I have seen did not light up the sky anything like this. They were pin-points of light that streaked across the sky, too high and too dim for the light to be diffused in the way I observed that Thursday morning. Maybe bigger showers of larger meteors behave differently, though. We called the army to see if they could tell us whether they were exercising in the area, but the PR woman was next to useless. She said there might have been some Harrier jump-jet activity on Salisbury Plain at some point during the last few weeks which might account for any sightings of coloured lights in the sky, but she was so cagey about any other activity that no firm information came from the call. Except a comment along the lines of (and I paraphrase): "I don't know everybody gets so excited about all these UFO sightings." Which is quite interesting, when you think about it. Is the geology of north Dorset conducive to earthlights? Maybe there's some tectonic action going on which is putting a strain on any faultlines that may exist. I'm carrying out further research on that. Meanwhile, if you have any relevant info, I'd be glad to read it here, if you'd like to share it. Cheers. -- Bob Kingsley - email - bobkingsley@winning.com - web - http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/bkingsley From: byrlip@enterprise.net (Adam Whaley) Newsgroups: alt.paranet.ufo,alt.aliel,research,alt.paranet.ufo,alt.conspiracy Subject: FLYING TRIANGLE OVER CARDIGAN BAY Date: Sun, 08 Dec 1996 14:15:24 GMT The West Wales Paranormal Group have received numerous reports of sightings of the famous Black Triangle and mysterious balls of light in the Cardigan Bay area of West Wales in the last few weeks. We had a varied cluster of 'Balls of Light' reports in mid-September, these were typical floating and moving spheres, usually sighted at night, sometimes followed afterwards by military planes. All very interesting stuff but nothing that you could really get your teeth into! No videos, no photos, no multiple witnesses. However, the evening of the Thursday 21st November was a different matter. A reporter phoned us to enquire if we knew of the sightings that were taking place in Brecon, Hereford and the West Midlands. We couldn't help. Then the phone really started ringing. Local newspapers were also getting reports of mysterious bright lights seen over the bay. They were variously described as brilliant flashes of white light, occuring intermittently and lasting for several seconds at a time, the phenomenon lasted for several hours. Some of the reports that the WWPG received were as follows: Aberystwyth/Lampeter Area. 1. Lady driving in the vicinity of Llandewi Brefi 9.45pm GMT 21/11/96 saw a very bright white light illuminate the sky and surrounding area, lasted about 1 second, almost blinded, second flash not as intense further north. Thought had come from the adjacent field about 100yds further on to the right. Had the impression of something 'rectangular'. Expected a crash of thunder but didn't come, she was left very puzzled. 2. Man driving up the coast towards Aberystwyth, 21/11/96 evening, saw bright flash of light for a few seconds, "was just like daylight, everything lit up" no sound. 3. 21/11/96 8.50pm GMT, man sitting watching tv, saw large 'thing' through window with white light on front and red light at rear, going so fast that lights seemed to merge, no sound, thought was plane about to crash as was so low as to almost be touching the chimney pots, startled and leaped to window to look, no further sign, object was travelling from inland towards sea (east to west). 4. 21/11/96 9.10pm GMT, Lady saw a flash for few seconds from front garden, column of very bright white light, seemed to light up the whole sky, ten times as high as wide, two to three miles out to sea. 5. 21/11/96 evening, Man, sub-editor of local paper, had been talking to someone who had seen a bright light in the sky overhead. Later when he was driving home from Aberystwyth, saw an enormous burst of white light to the right (seaward/west). "it was like a thousand fireworks going off at once". Cardigan Area. 6. lady with sister and female cousin driving from Eglysrwrw to Cardigan, 21/11/96 6pm GMT, saw 'shape' with red, blue and green lights moving towards car, exclaimed "it's like a Christmas tree" it went over the car quite low, sounded a bit like a jet, very loud and travelling slowly. "there were two noises, like a jet following another". 7. 21/11/96 8.45pm GMT, lady watching tv in Penparc, heard very low rumble - "something huge", went outside to look as always observed the regular military planes, saw triangle shape heading towards Cardigan, (had three curved tips), flashes of red and blue lights on tips, quite low in sky, not fast, had some kind of shape following it as "a single flash". 8. 21/11/96 9.30pm GMT, man, bus driver, driving home from Aberystwyth to Cardigan Depot, Saw flashing lights in sky, blue, red, yellow, lit up the surrounding white clouds very clearly, approx 10 minutes duration, accompanyed by "crackling-like static". 9. 21/11/96 about 9pm GMT, 3 miles out Glandwr village, noticed bright flash outside through window, realised that it was something strange, saw intermittent very bright flashes, approx 2 seconds duration, occurred about every fifteen seconds, sighted in a northerly direction, lit up the surrounding cloud, very spectacular, was NOT sheet lightning, reminded of the sfx in Close Encounters. There are several other reports that we are going to follow up but this should give you the general picture. Having just read the report on the Flying Triangle mystery by Omar Fowler there are so many correlations that we are convinced that we have had a visit. Having recently learned that the Flying Triangle mystery has been 'D' noticed, it will be interesting to see if the local papers give the matter a non-biased report - if we even get one that is. The bright flashes that were reported directly to the papers were reported variously as 'sheet lightning', distress flares (from a military exercise) , and would you believe - The Northern Lights! Estimated measurments of the UFO: diameter: 100 meters Height: 50 to 60 meters Cone shape, with ronded edges. Eyewitness: Haroldo Westendorff, 39, pilot of the plane with which he could fly around the object. He flew revolving around the object for 12 minutes at a distance of aproximately 100 meters. He circled three times around the object. The UFO seemed to be made of metal, like old tin, and had three protuberances like bubbles. The UFO was revolving around itself and was heading to the open sea. The Westendorff's airplane was travelling at about 60 miles /hour, (about 100km/hour) at an altitude of 1800 meters from the ground. >From the top of the ship a light appeared and flew at an angle of 45 degrees heading to the sky above in a astounding speed. Westendorff thought about taking his plane to the top of the ship to enter and to see what was inside it. He gave up the idea when a column of red waving rays appeared from the opening. Westendorff got scared at this point. Just after that the huge ship departed towards the sky above in high speed, whithout noise, explosions, no air movement, no noticeable physical reaction. Westendorff said he has seen f-16 at 2400 Km/hour, and suggests that the speed of this huge UFO was something around 12000 km/hour when it departed, in a matter of seconds. -> Posted by: Pedro Cunha From: ehkuhall7@delphi.com Newsgroups: alt.ufo.reports Subject: Re: FLYING TRIANGLE OVER CARDIGAN BAY Date: Mon, 9 DEC 96 00:56:45 -0500 Both bright lights and very loud booms have been taking place in many places in in Europe this year. In fact, a very loud boom was heard in southern France on the border with Spain on 21Nov. this year. I believe that the United States has developed very advanced and secret aircraft that may be stationed in England. The fact that the aircraft seen were triangular in shape indicates a design based upon the orignal work of Dr. Lippish, a German engineer, captured by the United States after World War II and sent to work in Ohio. I have no knowledge of what is happening. If you discover more information please inform me. Thank you. Best Wishes. Lou From: Brian Adams, SIT# 2405, SW Missouri Date: Dec. 9, 1996 Time: 18:00 to 20:00 CST Weather: Clear, windy, low 50's deg. F. Location: SW Springfield, Missouri On Monday, December 9th after arriving home from work I noticed a large amount of what I assumed were aircraft lights in the sky to the south and east of my home. The skies were perfectly clear and this made observing ideal. I went on my deck in the backyard to view the objects with 7x35 binoculars (by the way I want more powerful binoculars Santa). To my astonishment the objects were a mix of either commercial or military jets among three or four very large oval lighted objects. I suspecct that these oval objects were much higher than the jet aircraft because they were so usually large. I would estimate at least three times larger in a jet wingspan for the diameter of these oval objects. You could easily tell the differences between the fixed-winged a/c compared to the oval objects because basically from the way the strobed lights were seen and the way they were moving. First, the oval shaped objects were seen by the way their lights were detected seen in the binoculars only. Otherwise, you would just assume that they were jets. Using the binoculars these oval UFOs had very small but brighter strobing lights about its circular perimeter. The colors were white, red and blue. They would be bunched up closely on one edge then almost randomly jump to another edge. Because it looked so unusual and the dimensions of this object was huge, you knew it wasn't a jet. Secondly, the way they moved. Very slowly. Almost like it was hovering then deciding to move about to avoid detection by the jets approaching in their vicinity. When this happened, these UFOs would seem to just vanish or turn off their lights. Then you would notice them again after the jets would move further away. These were the same UFOs my family and I saw on February, 1995 when coming back from St Louis. First, I thought that they were the B-2 Stealth Bombers training mission but I checked yesterday with the Springfield-Branson Regional Airport Control Tower FAA office and no B-2's were in the vicinity on Monday evening. Note - the B-2's are based in Whitemann AFB in Missouri near Sedalia, Missouri. Also this is the home of the 509th Bomber squadron, remember Roswell AFB? I was excited at this point and I attempted to call friends in our local UFO investigator group, but I got someone who lived due east of me 6 miles away. He checked this out from his backyard and also watched the lights. About 18:15 hours, my thirteen year old son pointed out a very bright white object moving just about over the location of these UFOs moving slowly to the north. I assumed that it was a satellite, but it had to be the brightest satellite I have ever seen before! It even moved slower than a "normal" satellite and I haven't ever seen one move over that area of the sky before either. My wife was getting disturbed with me because I had to leave soon to take my daughter to her basketball game and I had to coach her team too! I remained outside running in and out talking to the friend on the phone. At about 19:00 hours, I then saw a very bright orange ball of light due east just above the horizon about 5 degrees up. I was watching it through the binoculars when it suddenly vanished. If it was 10 miles out then it would be in an area where sightings have occurred in the past. Then at 19:15 hours, another big surprise. A fighter jet flew just east above our home at a very high rate of speed and very low altitude of no more than a couple thousand feet high or so. While I told this to my friend he said that it was flying right above his home. I could even hear the jet roar on my phone. I have never seen a fighter jet taking off from our airport at that time before. (The control tower person said that there was a fighter jet in the area in my phone call to them yesterday) Still while all of this was going on the oval UFOs were about to the south and southeastern sky. Either there was two or three because they kept disappearing. Finally I had to leave for the basketball game and when I arrived there I saw a very bright red ball of light to the south of the center of Springfield. It had very small balls of white lights sparkling around it. I ran inside the gym and called my son at home who went out and said that it was just northeast of our home. He said that it just began moving southward accelerating very rapidly. I hung up the phone and ran back outside but I didn't see anything because of the street lights to the south. My son informed me when I got home that a small white light followed the red ball of light shortly after it went to the south of our home. This occurred at 20:00 hours. I will attempt to get any more information on police or sheriff reports around the area. The FAA control tower did not receive any UFO reports on Monday evening. However, they do forward any UFO reported sightings to an investigator locally who I know. Brian T. Adams Secretary, UFOIA, SIT# 2405 badams01@mail.orion.org
