Atlantykron '9x
The workshop on arts and science ROMANIA - 199x

Atlantykron '9x is a workshop held under the auspices of The Ministry of Youth and Sports, organized by the Center of Complex Studies, The National Foundation for Science - Fiction and The Research Center for Sport Problems.

This workshop gathers 200 young people from all over the country, fans of art and prospective science, anxious to confront their opinions, share their talents and stir their imagination. During 10 days, each of us learns to emphasize native abilities, to discover new passions and new friends, to work in a team as well as individually.

Today, Atlantykron is a modern direction of information and formation of young people for a dynamic society, a society in the very process of connecting to a worldwide informational structure. This workshop is the result of continuous transformation, a dream come true since 1990.

In 1990, through the initiative of an enthusiastic group of Romanian fans and creators of SF literature and art lead by Mr. Alexandru Mironov , a first gathering took place on this little island on the Danube, 20 km from Cernavoda, near the international archaeological site of Capidava. The special mood created by the fabulous natural environment together with the quality of the literature written that summer laid the foundations of a cultural act that later would lead to a tradition: The SF Summer Creation Camp.

A year earlier, a prospective science and SF literary circle, STRING, came into being, organized by Ms. Mihaela Muraru Mandrea and Mr. Florin Munteanu. STRING students and SF writers were discussing hot issues from a newly born science called Complexity (fractals, chaos, cellular automata, neural networks). The presence of well-known SF creators such as George Anania and Romulus Barbulescu induced the integration of scientific information into a literary form.

In 1992, a new group detached from STRING, one that was to become part of the Center for Complex Studies, a non-governmental and nonprofit association dedicated to the practical use of the knowledge of Nature's nonlinear phenomena and to organizing summer schools and workshops regarding the Complexity Science (according to the definition given by the researchers from Santa Fe - USA). Thus, in 1993, Atlantykron, the "summer capital of the Romanian SF", gathered not only SF creators, but also high-end technology experts, all in the spirit of transition from a technological society to an informational one.

Today, the Atlantykron phenomenon is known as a fertile hybridization of SF and prospective science, an inspired comming together of arts and sciences, of the natural and the man-made.

This year's programme includes an absolute premiere: a worldwide participation through the Internet. We'll be updating Atlantykron's virtual space daily starting July 26th. If you want to visit, all you have to do is press a key. We're hoping not for a passive visit, but for an active one: tell us your opinions, send us your works or your suggestions for the future! Come spend a few hot summer days on our island through the Internet!
