July 5th 1997,
Cornerstone Festival, Compassion stage.
When introducing Terry & Friends, the
MC for the evening, 7ball managing editor Bruce Brown,
looked out on the
crowd and stated he had not seen so much video and audio gear since his
last trip
to Circuit City. It seemed like everyone had
their cameras and
videocams ready to capture the moment.
(There could be some bootleg tapes
available soon)
The concert included songs spanning the 20 year career of Terry (Daniel
Amos /Swirling Eddies),
but did not come close to covering the 200 songs
Terry has written.
DA MEMBERS Terry was joined on stage by DA band
members Ed McTaggart on drums (who
else),
and Tim Chandler on bass (again, who else?)
Jerry Chamberlin joined
on guitar for several songs.
FRIENDS Andy Pickett (Prayer Chain) played guitar
throughout the evening. Andy
handled the leads very well,
especially with only 1 week of practice. Steve
Hindalong (The Choir) played percussion and made me
think of the early
days of Alex and Ed playing together. Derri Daugherty (Lost Dogs &
Choir) played
a little bitty 8 string thing on several songs he
had borrowed from Buddy Miller.
And last but not least, Phil
Madeira rounded out the Friends, playing and excellent organ and
accordion.
The following
songs were performed (in order).
SONGS:
Broken Ladders to Glory
Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You
ALARMA (Dedicated to
Dave Perry)
The Glory Road
If You Want To (Derri
joins the Friends with his little "guitar")
I'll Get Over It
Driving In England (again
with Derri)
When Everyone Wore Hats (Derri
again)
You lay Down (from John
Wayne)
Walls of Doubt (Jerry
joins on guitar for this song)
John Wayne (title cut)
Zoom Daddy (with Jerry
on guitar, and we all join in on the chorus)
Safety Net (with Jerry)
Let's Spin (the crowd
goes wild, people are falling down from lack of room to spin)
The end of the (all too short) evening was
an
acoustic encore with Derri, Jerry and Terry singing
the very first Daniel
Amos recording, "Ain't Gonna Fight It"
as well as the moving
song "Buffalo Hills"
Terry finished with a reprise of "The
Glory Road".
In parting, I want to congratulate all the DA fans who were able
to maintain their composure
even after it became evident that there would
be no second, third, or fourth encore...
