State Seal of State of Georgia
The members of Company B, 1st Regiment, Georgia State Line Infantry welcome you to our site.  We are a group of Civil War re-enactors from the State of Georgia, primarily from the Atlanta area as well as central and south Georgia.  We formed this unit in the hopes of bringing the story of the State Line Infantry to life.  Our goal is to authentically portray the experiences and hardships of the State Line soldiers.

In 1997, several veteran re-enactors decided to form this unit.  We wanted to bring a bit more realism and authenticity into our impressions.  We were bored with the usual tent cities and parade ground encampments which are associated with most battle re-enactments.  To put it plainly, this just isn't the way the average soldier experienced the war.  We were also bored with attending the same battle re-enactments each and every year, and wanted to put more emphasis on conducting living histories at facilities such as Fort McAllister near Savannah.  Further, we were tired of the myriad inaccuracies associated with most re-enactors.  Items such as modern work boots, red bandannas, modern eyeglasses, wrist watches, gaiters, etc., are not tolerated within our ranks.

We chose to recreate the State Line due to its unique nature.  Both the 1st and 2nd Regiments were "employed" by the State of Georgie rather than the Confederate government.  As such, they were equipped and attired differently than their Confederate counterparts.  They were a standing state army, unlike the come-and-go militia and home guards.  Due to this unique status, the State Line has "fallen through the cracks" of most Civil War research.  Neither Confederate volunteers nor militia, they don't neatly fit into researchers' conception of what a Georgia regiment was.  Even their war-time contemporaries oftentime mislabeled them as "Joe Brown's Pets".

This hobby is a continual learning process.  We realize that we can never truly experience the full measure of a civil war soldier.  Besides, we don't really want such experiences like a wound or death by disease, but we can at least look and act in the manner of a veteran.  Don't those boys from our collective past deserve better than the usual weekend warrior routine?

Anyway, we hope you like what you see.  Give us a holler if you are interested in joining up.  Even if you can't participate in re-enacting, we appreciate your comments.  We are always interested in talking with descendants of State Line soldiers.  You are an invaluable resource for our records and fill in many gaps in our research.

Enjoy your browsing!

The above photo is an original carte de viste albumen from the collection of Robert Mitchell.  This is a rare outdoor photo of a group of Confederate volunteers, circa 1861.  The location and photographer are unknown.  This was probably taken at a camp of instruction.
