May 2 to 31
BOTH GALLERIES: Men of G.A.S.S. (Gentlemen Artist Sketching Society) Group Exhibition
Meet-the-Artists Reception Friday, May 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. Beer, wine . . . and maybe something to eat!
Over fifty paintings, pastels and watercolors by Ken Hatfield, Carl Forslund, Dave Bigelow, and Tom Marshall, will fill both Alberta House galleries during May. Long-time artists, these gentlemen have been sketching outdoors together for the past three years.
Men of G.A.S.S. (Gentlemen Artist Sketching Society) |
Ken Hatfield, the senior member, is a retired geologist and geology teacher who has traveled the world, sketching as he went. A winner of the Sault Summer Arts Festival Graphics Award, he is well known for his work in pen and ink, an example of which is our Alberta House logo, a sketch he just tossed off as part of an early report on the building. (We grabbed it and kept it!)
Ken has had a number of solo exhibitions in Alberta House, some of watercolor paintings and some of pen and ink drawings. He produces photographs and woodcuts as well. Ken is a member of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Craftsmen. He will be demonstrating in Alberta House on Fridays, May 9, 16 and 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. and he‘s pretty amazing to watch. Come in and meet him.
Carl Forslund has been exhibiting and competing since 1942, beginning as a staff artist in the army, stationed on Guam. In 2005, he was one of the original eight artists inducted into the prestigious MASTERS CIRCLE by the International Association of Pastel Societies. The former Grand Rapids furniture designer is the co-founder of the Great Lakes Pastel Society.
Forslund summers on Drummond Island. This is his first appearance in Alberta House. See more about him at www.carlforslundpastels.com.
Dave Bigelow is a retired U.S. Customs inspector who studied painting before turning to law enforcement. He has been busily painting and drawing since his retirement, winning the Sault Summer Arts Festival Painting Award in 2004, the Design Award in 2005, the Graphics Award in 2006, and the Judge‘s Choice Award in 2007. He took the Best of Show Award in the DeTour Art Festival in 2006. You can see one of his drawings in the Exhibits - Bayliss Library section. It is used to illustrate the Bayliss Library events.
Dave works in pen and ink, watercolors, and pastels. He is a former Chairman of the Sault Area Arts Council Board, an Alberta House volunteer and a board member of the Great Lake Pastel Society.
Tom Marshall, who with his wife Kate, took the Best of Show in last summer‘s Sault Summer Arts Festival, (www.marshallartstudio.net) was an art teacher for most of his career. Now retired, Tom turned to pastels three years ago and hasn‘t looked back. He won First Place in last year‘s juried exhibit, "Bridges," in the Olive Craig Gallery for a pastel painting, and an Honorable Mention in last month‘s juried exhibition, "Blues," for another pastel.
Tom is on the board of the Great Lakes Pastel Society and is the Chairman of the Olive Craig Gallery Board.
