Love Story Theme (Lai) MCPS/Famous Chappell
On Monday, May 19th, 1999 the Harvard Club celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Love Story at Harvard Hall at the NY Harvard Club with its Director, Arthur Hiller. Now that we have a Los Angeles Harvard Film Group we will be able to celebrate in Hollywood on Wednesday, February 26th, 2003.
Love Story with Ali MacGraw and Ryan ONeal is the most popular movie ever made about Harvard and has helped define Harvard for better or worse in popular culture. Based on the book by Erich Segal, a former Harvard professor, the movie chronicles the ill-fated love affair between patrician Oliver Barrett IV and the very outspoken and ethnic Jenny Cavilleri. Love Story popularized the expression "preppie" and the saying "Love is never having to say you are sorry". Director Arthur Hiller is a former President of the Directors Guild, the current President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and one of Americas most popular Directors. In addition to Love Story, his films include The Americanization of Emily, Plaza Suite, The Out-of-Towners, Hospital, Silver Streak, The In-Laws, Outrageous Fortune, and The Babe. Mr. Hiller started his career in television and directed Naked City, Gunsmoke, Ben Casey, Alfred Hitchcock, and Route 66.
Joining Mr. Hiller was a panel of contemporary Harvard graduates who discussed Love Story and the Harvard of the late sixties and early seventies. Twenty-five years ago, Harvard was still an elitist sanctuary for the Oliver Barretts and his friends. Panelists discussed the many dramatic changes that transformed Harvard from that all-male sanctuary into a more diverse university.
